Under the call of the Interreg Italy–Croatia 2021–2027 programme, the MARINET project – Networking in Mariculture: Application of New Technologies for Diversified Sustainable Aquaculture Aimed at a Healthy Society and Competitive Regions has been approved.

The main goal of the project is to improve sustainable aquaculture in the Adriatic Sea by enhancing the sustainability of marine fish farming, assessing integrated mariculture systems, and analysing aquaculture product diversification through the farming of fish (sea bass and gilthead sea bream) and shellfish (European flat oyster, Ostrea edulis). The project also focuses on improving the quality, health safety, and security of aquaculture products, as well as identifying marketing tools and approaches to enhance consumer perception of aquaculture products, thereby increasing demand and, consequently, aquaculture production.

BICRO BIOCENTRE joins the project as a subcontracted partner due to its expert knowledge in biotechnology analysis and contributes to the quality of project results by utilizing its modern research infrastructure. A team of researchers from BIOCenter is involved, with experience in breeding, testing the homology and inactivation of bacterial vaccines, and homogenizing biofilms. Their work supports improvements in the safety and sustainability of marine fish farming in the Adriatic Sea.
